El Halconazo, La masacre de estudiantes en México de 1971

Eduardo Barraza

BOOK PAGE

El Halconazo, La masacre de estudiantes en México de 1971 (translated The Falcon Strike, the 1971 student massacre in Mexico) is a new book in Spanish published by the Arizona-based Hispanic Institute of Social Issues.

Written by long-time journalist and author Eduardo Barraza, this book relives the historical and tragic event known as "El Halconazo," (or Falcon Strike), an act of violent repression against students demonstrators by Mexican authorities in 1971 in Mexico City.

Barraza's newest work analyzes the sociopolitical context of the era, including the widespread student movements of the late 1960s, the effects of the Cold War, and the influx of Communism in Mexico.

The new title was released to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the massacre.

The book helps readers understand or know about el Halconazo by including information on the various social and political forces that shaped student protest and rebellion in México and the government's methods to keep students in line.

The author includes additional texts that expand information about the Mexican presidents who dealt with the student movement, the 50th anniversary of the 1968 student massacre, and a 20-year-long chronology of the important socio-political events in México from 1968 to 1988.

Growing up in Mexico City, the author lived the social climate of the late 60s and 70s. At an early age, he became interested in events like el Halconazo as he browsed through newspapers and magazines he had access to thanks to a relative, who would explain to him the photographs of student protests and demonstrations published in the media.

He remembers seeing a photo of the 1971 attack against students by paramilitary forces on the cover of a popular magazine. The cover of this new book uses that same photograph in an illustration form.

Years later, Barraza would become a photojournalist, photographing protests and demonstrations where groups of workers and students marched to make their demands known.

El Halconazo, La masacre de estudiantes en México de 1971 results from decades of interest in social issues and journalistic work by its author, who has also written about immigration in the United States, historical events and political and social leaders, as well as cultural and popular issues.

This book is available in print and digital format and on internet platforms.
