Joe Sotelo was born in Metcalf, Arizona, on February 25, 1919. He attended
elementary schools in Globe and Miami, Arizona, and graduated from Miami High
School in 1939.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and served with the 413th Infantry Regiment,
104th Timberwolf Division, the first Army in the European Theatre Operations. Joe
Sotelo saw combat as an infantryman in the Battle of the Ardennes, in France, also
known as the Battle of the Bulge,
the allied campaign in the winter of 1944 and ‘45, when over 500,000 troops
fought the final battles with Germany; and where over 76,000 men died. Joe
Sotelo was wounded in the advance in Cologne, and was awarded the Purple
Heart.
After the war, he returned to Miami, and became active in veterans’ affairs. In
1946, Joe Sotelo became a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, the VFW, in
Miami and in 1951, he became the local VFW Commander. By 1953, Mr. Sotelo was
the VFW Commander in the State of Arizona. In 1955, Joe Sotelo was appointed a
member of the National Americanization Committee of the VFW by the U.S.
Commander in Chief. Prior to his relocation to Phoenix, Mr. Sotelo was active in
political and community affairs in Miami.
